Ncedisa is proud to play an integral role in the process of growing, nurturing, harvesting, and packaging of various fruits and vegetables destined for local and international markets.
Harvest season is always busy no matter which fruits or vegetables are harvested, and this is also a proud moment when farmers and farmworkers alike see the fully grown and ready product.
Ncedisa is running a competition whereby you could win a hamper of some of the fruits and vegetables harvested by Ncedisa farmworkers. In addition, we are giving you a Kambrook smoothie maker to taste enjoy the produce.

Watermelons, spanspek and, green honey melons are the fruits that Ncedisa farmworkers mainly harvest in the summer months.
The watermelon, honey melon, and spanspek are part of the Cucurbitaceae family, and the fruits develop from the extremely fast-growing vines that grow close to the ground. What makes melon harvesting extremely challenging and laborious work is that fruits can only be harvested by hand using scissors or knives. Farmworkers must therefore bend down close to the ground to examine vines, then cut and harvest each fruit which is a relatively large size one by one.
Butternuts are part of the cucurbit family, and in the Eastern Cape, popular varieties farmed and harvested by Ncedisa include the Pluto and Arela butternuts. Butternuts are a warm-weather vegetable, and therefore planting commences in August and runs through to December. The growing period for this cucurbit vegetable is around 12-15 weeks, so the staggered planting allows for a staggered harvest period from December through to April.
Cabbage harvest season normally commences around September. To qualify for harvest, each cabbage is inspected according to health and size. Each cabbage is individually inspected, cut at the base of the cabbage head with a sharp knife, and ideally weigh approximately 3kg.
Ncedisa citrus pickers will this season aid Habata Agriculture in harvesting roughly around 1200 hectares of citrus that includes but is not limited to Genoa and Eureka lemons, soft citrus, like the Nova, Tango, and Nadorcott mandarins, as well as the ever-popular Navel and Valencia oranges.
The citrus harvest season will start in early April and is predicted to continue until the end of November. The season is a major job creator for seasonal and permanent farmworkers. Every season, thousands of citrus fruits are individually handpicked and examined according to colour, size, and shape
